Start by washing or wiping down items before donating. Most organizations request that clothing be clean. You don't need to have items professionally laundered, but they should be free of obvious dirt or stains. Check items carefully for stains, tears, holes, or broken zippers. Small issues like a missing button can often be repaired by organizations or by people who receive the clothing, but large holes or stains may mean items get discarded. Be honest about condition—donate only items you would be comfortable wearing yourself.

Sort clothing by type and season. If you're donating winter coats in summer, note that some organizations may store items for seasonal distribution while others work year-round. Separating items makes it easier for organization staff to process donations quickly. Group similar items together rather than mixing everything in one pile.

Check pockets and remove any items before donating. You might forget about something in a pocket, and organizations appreciate not finding surprises. If clothing has special care instructions, keeping tags on or noting care information can be helpful. For example, if a garment requires dry cleaning or has specific washing instructions, noting this helps the organization care for the item properly.

Consider the condition of undergarments carefully. Most organizations have strict policies about used underwear, bras, and socks. Many accept socks if they're in good condition and free of holes or stains, but policies on undergarments vary widely. When in doubt, call the organization before donating these items. Swimwear policies also vary—some organizations accept it while others don't.
