Understanding U-Haul Store Hours and What to Expect

U-Haul operates thousands of rental locations across the United States, and understanding their store hours is the first step in planning your moving or hauling needs. Most U-Haul locations maintain standard business hours that typically run from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, though these hours can vary significantly depending on the specific location and day of the week. Some high-traffic locations in urban areas may open earlier and stay open later to accommodate customer demand, while smaller rural locations might have more limited hours.

The company recognizes that people need to rent trucks and equipment at different times throughout the week. Weekday hours often differ from weekend hours, with many locations adjusting their schedules to serve customers before and after typical work hours. Holiday schedules may also differ from regular operating hours, so checking ahead during major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Independence Day is important if you're planning a move during these times.

U-Haul's official website provides a store locator tool where you can enter your address or zip code to find nearby locations and their specific hours. This tool shows whether each location is open or closed at the time you're searching, which can be helpful if you're checking availability outside normal business hours. The locator also displays other useful information such as truck availability, equipment types, and contact numbers for each location.

Understanding store hours helps you plan when to visit for your rental pickup or return. If you're relocating over a weekend, knowing that your local U-Haul has Saturday hours from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM allows you to schedule your move accordingly. Many people overlook this step and discover too late that their preferred pickup time falls outside store hours, which can create scheduling conflicts.

Practical takeaway: Before planning your move, use the U-Haul website store locator to identify locations near your current address and destination, then note their specific operating hours. This prevents scheduling conflicts and ensures you can pick up and return your equipment when it works with your timeline.

How to Find U-Haul Locations and Hours Online

Finding your nearest U-Haul location has become straightforward thanks to their digital tools. The company's website features a prominent "Find a Location" or "Store Locator" option that allows customers to search by city, state, or zip code. When you enter your information, the system displays all nearby U-Haul locations with their addresses, phone numbers, and current operating hours. For example, if you search for U-Haul locations in Denver, Colorado, you might find over 15 different rental locations spread throughout the metro area and surrounding suburbs.

The online locator provides real-time information about whether each location is currently open or closed. This feature is particularly useful if you're planning a late-evening pickup or an early morning return. The system also shows you the distance from your search location to each U-Haul facility, helping you identify the most convenient option. Distance matters when you're trying to coordinate pickup and drop-off times, especially if you're renting a truck for a local move versus a long-distance relocation.

Beyond the basic locator, U-Haul's website includes detailed location pages for each store. These pages typically feature customer reviews, available equipment inventory, pricing information, and sometimes photos of the facility. Some locations offer additional services beyond standard truck rentals, such as moving supplies, storage units, or specialty equipment rentals. Reading these location-specific details helps you understand what each store can offer and whether they have the particular truck size or equipment you need.

Mobile apps and third-party mapping services also help you locate U-Haul stores. Google Maps, Apple Maps, and other navigation applications display U-Haul locations and their hours when you search for "U-Haul near me." These tools can be helpful when you're traveling or need quick access to store information on your phone. Many of these apps also include customer ratings and reviews that provide insight into individual location quality and service experiences.

Practical takeaway: Visit uhaul.com and use their store locator tool to create a list of 2-3 convenient U-Haul locations near your origin and destination. Check their hours and call ahead to confirm current hours and equipment availability rather than relying on outdated information.

What's Included in a U-Haul Rental Guide

A comprehensive U-Haul rental guide provides information across several key topics that help customers understand their options and make informed decisions. These guides typically cover truck size categories, explaining the differences between compact cargo vans, full-size moving trucks, and larger commercial vehicles. For instance, a guide might explain that a 10-foot truck works well for small apartments or dorm rooms, a 15-foot truck handles one-bedroom apartments or small houses, a 20-foot truck suits two to three-bedroom homes, and 26-foot trucks accommodate four-bedroom houses or larger moves. Each size category includes details about cargo capacity, fuel efficiency, and typical rental costs.

Rental guides also detail the various equipment and supplies available beyond standard truck rentals. U-Haul offers dollies, hand trucks, furniture pads, boxes, packing tape, and other moving supplies. Guides explain how to use these items properly to protect your belongings during transport. For example, a guide might describe how furniture pads prevent damage to wooden pieces and how to properly secure items in a truck bed using tie-downs and cargo straps. Understanding these equipment options helps renters avoid damage claims and protects their possessions.

Pricing information is another major component of rental guides. Guides typically explain how U-Haul calculates rental costs, including base rates, mileage charges, and equipment fees. They discuss factors that influence pricing, such as time of year (peak moving season costs more), distance, truck size, and current demand. Many guides provide sample pricing scenarios showing how much a local move might cost versus a long-distance move. This information helps customers budget for their move and understand where their rental costs come from.

U-Haul rental guides also cover reservation procedures, payment options, and insurance information. They explain how to make reservations online, over the phone, or in person, and what information you'll need to provide. Guides discuss the different payment methods accepted, cancellation policies, and any associated fees. Insurance sections outline the types of coverage available and help renters understand liability and damage protection options. Understanding these administrative details prevents surprises when you arrive for your rental.

Practical takeaway: Review U-Haul's rental guide before contacting the company to rent equipment. Understanding truck sizes, equipment options, and pricing structures allows you to quickly communicate your needs and make decisions more efficiently when speaking with a rental representative.

Choosing the Right Truck Size for Your Move

Selecting the appropriate truck size is one of the most important decisions in planning a successful move. Underestimating size results in multiple trips or having to leave items behind, while overestimating wastes money on unnecessary capacity. U-Haul offers a range of sizes to match different moving scenarios. Their 10-foot trucks, often called cargo vans or cube vans, provide about 300 cubic feet of cargo space and work well for studio apartments, dorm rooms, or small offices. These smaller vehicles are fuel-efficient and easy to maneuver in tight spaces, making them ideal for urban environments.

The 15-foot truck represents one of U-Haul's most popular sizes, offering approximately 600 cubic feet of space. This size accommodates the contents of most one-bedroom apartments or smaller homes. With dimensions of roughly 15 feet long, 7 feet 8 inches wide, and 6 feet 4 inches tall, this truck can hold approximately 3,000-4,000 pounds of cargo. It provides enough capacity for a bedroom set, living room furniture, kitchen items, and miscellaneous boxes without excessive empty space that wastes rental costs.

For two to three-bedroom homes, U-Haul's 20-foot truck offers about 1,000 cubic feet of space. This size accommodates bedroom furniture, dining sets, living room items, and extensive household goods with room for boxes and smaller items. The 20-foot truck works well for families moving moderate distances who want to complete their move in one trip. At roughly 20 feet long and capable of holding 5,000-6,000 pounds, this truck sits between economy and commercial vehicles in terms of ease of driving.

The largest standard U-Haul option, the 26-foot truck, provides approximately
